There aren’t a lot of kindness holidays. Actually, only two. World Kindness Day is in November. And, the other, Random Acts of Kindness Day, is this Friday, February 17th. To make the most of this holiday – some people have even made a week of it. So, much like my gratitude challenges of past, I’m going to try to do at least one conscious but random act of kindness every day.
“In a gentle way, you can shake the world.”
-Mahatma Gandhi
Some people criticize large scale efforts of small actions. There are the cynics who think that it is shallow and not “true” kindness. Like the “kind” person who buys a coffee for the next customer in line but then heads off to work and screams at their employees. Sure, I get that. On the other hand, isn’t it better that at least they did that one small act of kindness? What if they just screamed at their employees? At least someone got a free coffee.
That’s why Gandhi’s quote spoke to me. What if every single person chose to do one gentle, kind act each day? That would absolutely shake the world.
It doesn’t have to be difficult or expensive. And definitely doesn’t need to be too planned or orchestrated. Just keep your eyes open this week. Look around and try to see where there is need. Maybe your neighbor left their keys in their door? Or perhaps you could give someone your seat on the subway? Or maybe you’ll take the dog out for the night walk even though your spouse is supposed to do it? What gentle act could make a difference in someone’s life today?
